The Japanese carmaker Honda leads the way in environmentally friendly vehicles and seems to put their U.S counterparts to shame, as they seem to be one of the worst polluters in the world. Honda, Toyota and Nissan come high in the rankings in the Union of Concerned Scientists biennial report, which sets a trend for the Japanese. This is not the case though for carmakers like General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler as they all come low down in the report.

Don MacKenzie, the author of this study, which focuses on vehicles from 2005, worries that the gap between the cleanest and dirtiest vehicles is getting larger. The rankings for the vehicles test the smog-forming and carbon dioxide emissions on vehicles from the top ten automakers.
